INTERVIEWER
This one, it's, this has more to do with how you prepped for this interview and by this interview, I mean the company that you're targeting is General Matter. I try not to say the name of the company or the group just to make my editing easier, but, um, what is the most interesting thing you've learned about the target group that you're going to or their customers as you've been preparing for interviewing with this team?
CANDIDATE
Most interesting thing about this company and especially about the, um, I mean, the company is uh very well known and and uh um. Worldwide success, um, but in particular, the department is Uh, very unique in that they're creating, uh, more of their independent B2B payment systems, um, that are similar to what PayPal does, uh, as a company, they're wanting to build that payment, the B2B payment systems within their company, so they're independent from all those external, uh, financial institutions, um, and, and Building this, they are, um, they have to build it worldwide, uh, which means that they have to take into account the, um, the different laws and rules and laws regulations that are required in order to, um, for accounting purposes, for tax purposes, um, they have to cater to different demographic graphics, and cultural, cultural, uh, differences, um, uh, other legal issues, so it's a very, um, Interesting and exciting opportunity to break new ground, uh, because they don't have it. They're right now they're in the, uh, they handle retail payments, um, and they've been doing that for decades, uh, very well, but the B2B payment systems are, uh, very, a very new process for them, um, and a very, it's very complex, so that to me is, is very exciting. But
Interviewer Insight
candidate did not answer the question.
INTERVIEWER
I guess what, what new did you, you know, what, what, what's new or surprising thing did you learn about this group, right? I mean, it's, Targeting B2B payments isn't, I wouldn't say that that's new or interesting, right? So, as, as you've kind of done your, your work around understanding the team or what they're trying to accomplish or even their target customer set, was there some, something that jumped out at you that, that you didn't know before that was interesting that you learned or anything that kind of lines up with that?
CANDIDATE
Well, I was surprised that they were uh not as mature as they, I thought they would be. Um, I thought it's a large, uh, division, but it's also not as sophisticated as I thought it would be, and that they're still, uh, formulating a lot of the, uh, digital payment system, uh, features that hasn't really, uh, addressed a lot of the pain points of the customers. So, um, uh, for instance, in, in Uh, helping them to provide their, you know, for a business to, uh, refund, you know, for instance, it's if it's a new ball game versus refunding a, a retail customer, things like that, it's very complex. So it's, for me, it's, it's new. I haven't been in this, uh, Type of environment, um, and I found it, uh, to be very to me that's interesting and unique, and to you, perhaps, um, you're familiar with the B2B payments, and I understand, uh, it's certainly been developed, but, um, they haven't done it internally within this uh retail space, I mean within this company, uh, um, where they're, uh, predominantly retail.
Interviewer Insight
the question was about what the candidate had learned about the company or product; this answer block is not meeting that expectation.
INTERVIEWER
And so given your relative uh lack of knowledge about this space. How do you think about your 1st 90 days on the job?
CANDIDATE
My 1st 90 days would be, uh, I expect a steep learning curve, um, and a lot of time spent researching, uh, what they've been doing right, where they failed, uh, what their opportunities, uh, what their challenges are, um, and finding out where I can quickly add value. Um, that's really what my focus is. Um, that's my challenge in the 1st 90 days is to really find that, that niche where I'm going to be adding unique value, uh, to their team.
Interviewer Insight
there is a seed of a good answer here, but it is too high level and non-specific without any specific goals or end targets. "Research" could go on indefinitely.
INTERVIEWER
But again, that's that's still a bit of a hand wavy high level answer, right? What, what specifically would you do?
CANDIDATE
I would be um Not only doing my own independent research um of everything that I can find, which there's an enormous amount of resources you can imagine when you get start, start with the company, but also I'd be meeting with people, uh, other product managers, I'd be meeting with engineers or meet with architects I meet with them one off to really understand. What those issues are, I'd meet with the uh internal customers, uh, stakeholders that will be able to provide the insight into what the pain points are, what the issues are, what succeeded, what's been successful, what has been, has failed, um, and, uh, where the, the greatest needs are. So, in talking with people and having my individual interviews, I learned quite a bit. So I usually do that. Um, and then I'm able to formulate more of what I'm going to do as I go along, and so my, I modify my approach and my research and my understanding, uh, or my, uh, building my knowledge base as I go along based upon what I've learned.
Interviewer Insight
too high level and non-specific.
INTERVIEWER
OK. Let's finished my note. Sometimes I can't type as fast as I want.
Expert Assessment
Interviewer assessment - would be used in a hiring meeting

The candidate was unable to express anything interesting which they had learned about the company or products ahead of the interview. Despite multiple prodding efforts to gain insight into what the candidate had learned the candidate provided answers which were either not addressing the specific question or were too high level to be useful or appropriate in this interview.
